Nate's grandma passed away yesterday morning. She was such a wonderful lady. Since I do not have any living grandparents of my own, Nate's grandparents definitely became mine too. Nate and his mom lived with her parents for most of his childhood/adolescence, so his grandma was like a second mother. She had diabetes and has been blind for several years, ever since I have known her. Back in late 2009, she fell and broke her knee. She had surgery, and as a result, had a small heart attack. She has been bed ridden ever since. She spent a couple months in the hospital and a nursing home and was then able to go back home, but had 24 hour nursing care and was confined to a hospital bed. She stayed there for a year and in last few months, was moved to another nursing home. For the last half of the year she barely even opened her eyes and was no longer communicating. Ever since that fall, that started it all, she seemed really depressed. It wasn't even like she was the same person. So really, we lost her over year ago. Nate never wanted to visit her. I think it was too hard for him to see her suffering like that. When he found out she had passed, although he feels it's for the better, he is sad he didn't visit her the day before, when he was over at his grandpa's.
Nate's grandparents had been married for something like 65 years. They were such great role models for a young married couple, like ourselves. She will be missed so much, but she is in a better place now, with restored health and vision. And someday she will be reunited with the love of her life and they will once again embrace each other.
{Our wedding day}

{We took Penny to meet her great grandma. She isn't the cuddly, lap type, but she fell asleep right on Marilyn's lap. So precious}
